Chapter 14

Robert missed lacking privacy. After having to deal with his mother and the broken crockery, he’d found the bedroom emptied of Nathan’s things. Even the sheets were gone from the other bed. It was as if Nathan had never shared this space with him, and despite the anger simmering somewhere in Robert’s gut, he chose not to look for Nathan around the house or try and convince him to stay.

Nathan had the right to be angry.

It had been Robert who backtracked as soon as arousal stopped clouding his mind. And just like before, just like years ago with Jake, panic pushed him to do things he was not proud of. He couldn’t explain his behavior, no matter how long he waded through his brain for answers. In one moment, touching Nathan was the most important thing in the universe, but the moment it was done, other thoughts replaced lust, poking at the most unpleasant regions of Robert’s mind and biting into his flesh like needles stuck under his nails. He was too old to let himself just act in the moment. It never got him anyplace good.

And this time, Robert’s impulsiveness ruined the status quo between him and Nathan to the point where there were no longer any pieces to pick up.

Days passed, and Nathan wouldn’t even look at him, speaking only when it was absolutely necessary around Mia or Mother. When they were on their own, Nathan actually went as far as walking off when asked a question. A part of Robert wanted to grab him, shake him, unleash the dormant fury and use violence like he always had, but that would get him nowhere. Only further away from Nathan.

The B&B was to reopen in late October, but with Nathan cleaning, painting the walls, and arranging the decor as if he were on speed and needed to spend his energy somewhere, the house was already looking pristine. Just like Nathan for that matter. If anything, he lately looked even more polished than before. His hair was that inch longer, almost brushing his shoulders now, and he always smelled so fresh whenever he passed Robert. October was a cooler month anyway, but with the heat, Nathan surely showered twice a day at least to stay this fresh. Just thinking about that had Robert remember that one time Nathan had asked him to be in the bathroom while he showered.

And the longing wasn’t going anywhere. Always there, constantly fueled by the sight of the most attractive man within miles. He didn’t belong in a small B&B in the Texan countryside. Nathan’s was the world of luxury, yachts, and expensive cars, not cleaning sheets and painting fences. And yet there he was, across the table from Robert and introducing Mother to a new strategy of drawing in online customers.

“We should definitely make it a selling point that this place is family-friendly. I was looking up swings, trampolines and things like that, and they wouldn’t break the bank while creating an attraction for children.
